The three biggest local search engines (Google, Yahoo, and MSN) all
allow users to rate local businesses and enter written reviews. If
you have not already done so try typing in your type of business
and your location (ex. Gainesville Florida Chiropractor) into
Google to see how you rank.

You will notice that higher ranking businesses also tend to have
more reviews. Of course this is not the only factor, but it is one
that you can control.

I had an interesting conversation with a woman from Yahoo Local
support staff last night. I asked her point blank what I needed to
do with one of my client’s taxi services to get a higher ranking.

The surprising part was that she actually told me. Her response
was that if I got about 5 more customer reviews I would definitely
be in the top five listing.

Obviously I can’t guarantee the numbers and it is true that Yahoo
places more emphasis on customer reviews than MSN and Google, but
the point is that more reviews can only help you gain a prominent
listing.

How I found the direct link to review the business and made the URL
small

1. I went to Google.com and searched “Ocean City Maryland Taxicab”,
then scrolled through until I found the business. I repeated this
with Yahoo.com and MSN’s Live.com

2. Then I right clicked on “Write a Review” and picked “Copy Link
Location”

3. Next I went to http://www.tinyurl.com and pasted the link to get
a much smaller link that I wanted my customers to see.

4. I then copied that URL into my letter

There are many services that offer search engine submission, but relatively few that offer submission specifically to local search engines and local search directories. AddLocal will do this, but I recommend submitted yourself.

No one knows your business and cares about how the listing will appear to your customers like you. As an aside note I strongly recommend against paying anyone to submit your website to the search engines as this is a complete waste of your time and money. The search engines will find your website on their own.

Pay Per Click advertising is a very powerful tool, but it requires time and active management. The biggest mistake made by beginners is to simply select some very generic keywords enter a high bid price and walk away.

You need to be actively managing your campaign. You should be using Google Analytics as well as the tracking tools in your Adwords account to analyze exactly what your conversion rate and ROI is.

My comments:	You get preferred ad placement on superpages.com and only pay when people click on the link to your business. In general the yellow page websites are much lower volume than the regular search engines, but the people on these websites are definitely “looking to buy” rather than just “browsing”. It is a good ad on if you have the time.

My comments:	They do a lot of the leg work for you. They pick out keywords, they edit your ad copy. Your ad also gets placed on their partner websites. I have heard multiple reports of click fraud with citysearch, so I am not currently recommending it.

These are sites where people go to review your business. They are basically word of mouth advertising for the 21st century. Individuals go onto these sites and review local businesses.

Realistically you should wait to utilize these services. These sites are worth your time if you live in a bigger city in a fairly competitive business. You will probably not get much traffic from these sites, but the customers that do get will be highly qualified.

Important…With most of these sites you will have to setup an account as if you wanted to review the site before you are allowed to add a new business.
